This book offers a good overview of Egyptian history but suffers from the same criticisms as Aldred´s "Egypt to the end of the Pharaohs"

Chronicle of the Pharaohs
by P Clayton

This book is fairly complete and offers a good overview of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt including cartouches and details on the king´s exploits and building works.

Ancient Egypt; the great discoveries
by Nicholas Reeves

This book is a good introduction to Egyptian history phocusing on specific sites in detail.

Ancient Egypt
by Barry Kemp

Kemp provides a good general discussion on the culture of Ancient Egypt with particular reference to the archeological evidence. The book does not try to cover the entire period, but considers a number of issues in more detail. Well worth a look.


Mysteries


The mammoth book of Egyptian whoodunnits
by Mike Ashley

This book is a light hearted look at some of the mysteries surrounding ancient Egyptian history. It is a good introduction to some of the more speculative theories, but does not give too much credence to them.

by Nicholas Reeves

Reeves examines the evidence from the lost city of Akhetaten (now known as Armarna) for clues to the lives of Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Tutankahmun.

A general overview of the ancient Egyptian approach to law and order. The book refers to a number of administrative records discovered by archeologists and the Egyptian conceptions of justice and balance (Ma´at).

A highly readable book considering the position of women in Ancient Egypt by this respected Egyptologist.

The private lives of the Pharaohs
by Joyce Tyldesley

Tyldesly takes an in depth look at the day to day life of the pharaoh. This is an interesting book, which seeks to give a more intimate picture of pharonic life.
