Menkaure ("eternal like the souls of Re") was known as Mencheres or Mykerinos to the Greeks. He was described as a benevolent ruler, unlike either Khafre or Khufu, and his portraits seem to support this view. Legend has it that the Gods did not approve of his gentle ways, and decreed that he would only reign for six years. However, Manetho credits him with a reign of sixty-three years, and it is suggested that he actually reigned for twenty-eight years.
He built the Third pyramid at Giza. He also left us some lovely slate statues showing the King with his chief wife, Khamererenebty, and Hathor. He also built a satellite pyramid for Khamererenebty.
