Reisner suggested that Meritetes was originally a concubine in the harem of Sneferu who took on the same role under the reign of Khufu . However, it is now thought that she was in fact a powerful political figure who had the ear of Khufu. She was given the title of King's Mother, so she must have been the mother of one of Khufu's successors, possibly Djedefre and is also thought to be the mother of Prince Kauab Hardjedef, Meresankh, and Mertiotes.
